Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome or TMJ

The temporomandibular joint is where your lower jaw connects to the rest of the skull. Damage or erosion of this joint can cause Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome, or TMJ.

Symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain
  • Headaches
  • Teeth grinding
  • Sometimes ringing in the ears.

Prolonged stress can aggravate the symptoms of dizziness and neck pain. Since the problem is often caused by teeth position or bad bite mechanics, dentists can treat it.

Depending on diagnosis, treatment may involve wearing a night guard to prevent teeth grinding, relaxation techniques, or in serious cases, muscle relaxants. After consultation, you and your dentist may also decide on a tooth realignment, which modifies how your upper and lower teeth come together. It may involve dental restoration or adjusting the position of natural teeth.
